How well the tones and shadows go
Of silver birches on the snow!
How well the snowy mountains high
Are cut and shaped to fit the sky!
Just as the pine bark fits the tree,
So I fit you and you fit me!

Overnight the last leaves fall from frozen trees
And settle slowly on the forest floor.
Winter settles in too. The woods are still
And all their many creatures lie asleep,
Hid out of sight beneath black twisting roots,
Down endless tunnels, deep beneath the earth.
Snow falls like sleep above, and sleep like snow,
Casting a spell of silence all around,
Good for a hundred years – or so it seems.
From the woodsman’s hut smoke climbs slowly,
He hibernates too, or wishes he could!
Daddy returned from Holland
With a music-box for me.
He pulled a string and from inside,
As clear as clear could be,
A little tune came tumbling out
Like moonlight on the sea.
I held it up against my ear
As I lay still in bed.
The moonlight filled my tiny room,
The music filled my head,
And when at last I fell asleep,
I dream of it instead.
